OUR STORY

The summer of 2018, while many of us were feeling helpless and forlorn over our disastrous president and his spineless GOP, the ever entrepreneurial Dahna Goldstein reached out to her friend- the ever creative Alex Posen- with a good question: Why can’t I find clothes that will signal my political beliefs and be appropriate in a work environment? This thought, coupled with Dahna and Alex’s shared passion for making the world a kinder-saner-safer and bluer place led to the creation of Resistance by Design- a company dedicated to making thoughtfully designed and politically opinionated accessories and designs.

Our first project, HERWAVE 2018, is a printed scarf that celebrates the record number of women entering politics at this critical juncture in history. This gives us hope and motivates us. Fueled by the conviction that women can lead the Blue Wave, Alex Posen set out to draw illustrations of every single Female Democratic Congressional Candidate who is in the running for the midterm elections. When she started in early August, there were 230 democratic women running. By September 5th, when Resistance by Design launched the print, there were still a whopping 209 candidates left in the ring.

Last year, we collaborated with NARAL Pro-choice America on the elegant FOR FREEDOM scarf, which traces the history of women’s rights from the passage of the 19th Amendment, to the election of a historic number of women to the 116th Congress. We have also partnered with The Women’s March to help mobilize and dress the resistance.

We launched the VOTE collection in April 2020, and helped spark a huge (and needed) phenomenon of VOTE designs. Our vote mask imagery has become ubiquitous with the current movement.

The earliest notable supporter of Resistance by Design's VOTE mask is Hillary Clinton, who wore our Revolution VOTE Mask in May, changing her Twitter profile picture to one of her in the mask. More recently, Clinton wore our Suffrage VOTE mask to the unveiling of the "Monumental Women" monument in Central Park in August. Other noteworthy supporters of the VOTE mask and RbyD brand include Kerry Washington, Mark Ruffalo and Harry Belafonte.  Sports legends Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird encouraged their fans to wear a mask and cast a ballot wearing RbyD's Fair Fight Purple VOTE mask. And a montage during the Democratic National Convention featuring women in vote masks dynamically highlighted RbyD's VOTE mask.

This year, Resistance by Design worked closely with Stacey Abrams' team at Fair Fight to develop a collaborative purple VOTE mask.  Fair Fight is donating a portion of proceeds to the Southern Center for Human Rights.  Stacey Abrams wears her Fair Fight purple VOTE mask in her Twitter profile, and wore a Revolution RByD VOTE mask to Rep. John Lewis's funeral.

Resistance by Design continues to create thoughtful designs that empower everyday activists and amplifies social justice movements.

Dahna Goldstein and Alexandra Posen

We’re women. We’re mothers, artists, fashion designers, and tech entrepreneurs. We are passionate advocates for women's rights, human rights, LGBTQ rights, black lives, immigrants, science, and so many other issues currently under political attack.

And we know women are the way to turn the tide. We've made signs. We've worn t-shirts. We've marched. We've protested. We've chanted. We vote. We’ll continue to do those things. We also want to wear our values at work, on campus, and on the town.

We invite you to join us. #resistancebydesign
